Our thyroid plays an important role in metabolism. Our metabolism is like the heat we require when cooking dishes.
Graves' Disease :
Graves' Disease is an Autoimmune Disease where our immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid glands, causing it to enlarge and usually leads to hyperthyroidism, where our thyroid overproduce thyroid hormones. Elevated metabolic rate may sound like a good thing to many of us, but a long term continuous elevated metabolic rate leads to a host of health issues.
Why would our Thyroid produce excessive Thyroid Hormones? :
There is a hormone in our body that is responsible for stimulating the release of our thyroid hormones, it's known as Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) produced by our pituitary gland.
Graves' Disease --> Immune System produce TSI (Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin) --> Stimulate TSH Receptors --> Sends Signal to Brain --> Increase Thyroid Hormone Productions.
Our Thyroid is normally tightly regulated by two parts of our brain : Pituitary Gland and Hypothalamus, as shown in the picture above. They are responsible to tell our Thyroid to turn ON and OFF.
The abnormal antibodies, as mentioned above, interrupts the normal feedback mechanism, causing levels to be unusually high.
Therefore, this leads to a condition known as Hyperthyroidism, where our Thyroid produces too much Hormone Thyroxine.
Areas Affected :
Radioiodine - For destroying the gland. Lots of complication, in my personal opinion.
Radioiodine --> Thyroid Gland and Immune cells perceive this as Foreign Attack --> TSI rises --> Hyperthyroidism persist until most of the thyroid tissue is destroyed --> Radioactive remains in our body for a long time due to long Half-Life.
The knife - This will be entirely your choice. This should be final as well, if really nothing can be done. Complication includes, potential damage to vocal chords and parathyroid glands (small glands adjacent to thyroid that controls calcium absorption, EKKKK!!!), low levels of thyroids (Imagine cooking without heat) and therefore long term / lifetime thyroid hormone replacement is needed. Nevertheless, it's still a better option than long term Hyperthyroidism which can progress to serious heart issues if not treated.
Anti-thyroid Drugs - These drugs are designed to reduce hormone levels, by reducing TSI production, and are given in initial stages. Relapse of condition is extremely normal. Despite the chances of re-occurence is high, looking at them from the positive side, they actually buys us time to TAKE ACTION to allow immune system to heal and recover.
From the Holistic Point of View :
In the past, it's believe that excess intake of things like Iodine will lead to Hyperthyroidism.
Those days, doctors believed that : High Iodine --> Hyperthyroidism and Low Iodine --> Hypothyroidism
But recent studies has shown that Iodine is one of the most important but one of the MOST OVERLOOKED nutrient in our body particularly for Thyroid and for every other tissue in our body. Here's the thing, our Thyroid actually shuts itself down when too much Thyroid Hormone is detected, Iodine plays an important role in this function. I would suggest that you do a comprehensive study yourself on Iodine itself rather than having me spoon feed.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
This nutrient plays an important role in reducing inflammation and regulate immune functions.
Brain Function, you'll find out why when you read the entire article.
Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin D3
Many Thyroid patients will end up having bone issues. This is important. Vitamin D3 improves T-Cells Balance (Autoimmune)
Particularly Coconut Oil
Flaxseed and Chia Seed
Can be consumed or applied to Goiters too. Soak them in warm water.
This is extremely important as a huge part of our immune functions are regulated in our gut.
Try those without Caffeine. The antioxidants in Green Tea works very well in Thyroid issues. In countries where green tea is consumed as a daily practice, thyroid issue cases are much lower.
Grape Seed Extract
I purposely save this for the last because the best is always kept for the final blow. The benefits of Grape Seed Extract on many diseases is simply marvelous but it will take many books and journals to fully explain to you how it works. Benefits go all the way to DNA levels.
Here is just one of the many studies :
"Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract attenuates DNA fragmentation and oxidant damage in various tissues of rats with hyperthyroidism"
Last but not least, just feel free to drop me a message and I'll respond as soon as I possibly can.
